There is still time to save our planet

November 9, 2019 4:47 PM

Dear Sir,

The real miracle is that despite our extravagance and indeed indulgence, we still have a chance of saving this planet for future generations if we act wisely (RS Norbury p33 last week's Chronicle).

Though no expert, my reading of the science is that we can still ensure our survival if we act quickly and boldly enough.

What the Extinction Rebellion has told us, if we care to listen, is that we are not doing nearly suffi cient.

When medical emergencies occurred, I remember leaving my supper half eaten and running to the cause of it.

We seem to have lost this sense of urgency, partly I suspect because of the global and long-term aspects of this issue and somehow, we need to regain it if we want to survive as a species.

Small steps such as eating less meat are essential as part of a bigger package and will imbue our politicians with the more satisfying sense of following rather than leading.

Yours faithfully,

(DR) PETER HIRST
