Committee system worked for me

By Dr Peter Hirst in Congleton Chronicle

Dear Sir,

I would like to throw Congleton Liberal Democrats' weight behind the movement to revert to the committee structure at Cheshire East Council.

Though it is some time since I was a Congleton borough councillor, I remember feeling I had some infl uence on the proceedings through the committee system. Granted, we were then the ruling party on the council and so was involved in the decisions of that group.

With the bigger council, it is even more important that all shades of opinion are expressed and taken into account when making decisions.

By doing that, perhaps some of the major mistakes made recently by the ruling Conservative group might have been avoided.

I don't understand how Coun Rod Menlove, as quoted in your article on page nine of last week's Chronicle, can believe that, "we already have democracy".

If this refl ects the view of the Conservative group, then it is truly time for a change of political leadership next May. - Yours faithfully,

Chairman, Congleton constituency
