Wrong priorities over wheelie bins

October 4, 2018 4:02 PM
By Dr Peter Hirst in Congleton Chronicle

Dear Sir,

With regard to your article on page fi ve of last week's Chronicle concerning charging for waste bins, Cheshire East seems to have wrong priorities.

While acknowledging that it needs to balance its budget, this should not be at the expense of driving its waste strategy in the wrong direction.

It is hard enough for residents, especially those living in terraced and similar properties to arrange their waste disposal according to environmental principles.

To bring cost into the equation at a time when household budgets are tight, at least partly due to the Government's disastrous Brexit negotiations, makes a diffi cult task almost impossible.

When balancing funds for heating, eating and waste disposal, it is not diffi cult to see where priorities might lie.

The overall principle must be to reduce waste and direct what remains to recycling wherever possible by making it easy to place it in the appropriate bin, not placing obstacles in the way. - Yours faithfully,

Chairman, Congleton Constituency Liberal Democrats.
