Scrap the Tax

5.54.18pm BST (GMT +0100) Tue 2nd May 2006

The Council Tax charged jointly by Conservative-controlled Cheshire County and

Congleton Borough Councils (as well as the Police & Fire Service) has gone up this year

by around 5% - DOUBLE THE RATE OF INFLATION.

Council Tax - which was brought in by the last Conservative Government to replace the

hated Poll Tax - is an unfair tax which bears heavily on people with limited incomes,

especially pensioners.

Liberal Democrats want to get rid of Council Tax and bring in a system which is

related to a person’s ability to pay. Under the Lib Dem proposals the TYPICAL

HOUSEHOLD could be £450 a year BETTER OFF.

Congleton Liberal Democrats have recieved a massive response to their 'Axe the Tax' survey put on their Focus leaflets.

Candidate for Congleton North, Andy Morton said "I am delighted that Congleton residents are acknowledging the work we are doing to eradicate this unfair and unjust tax".
