Dear Sir,
Howard Thorp is completely wrong, April 7th, in suggesting that the Liberal Democrats are the same as Conservatives and Labour. It was our Shadow Chancellor, Vince Cable who first saw the nation's looming problems and pointed out a decade ago that our mountain of debt and over reliance on the banking sector would lead us into trouble. He also first suggested breaking up the banks as part of the solution.
Howard seems to suggest that we should return to the days of mass public ownership. Not only is this not feasible but we cannot afford the vast sums required. It would be better to increase the accountability through local government of certain sectors such as buses, schools and hospitals.
The Liberal Democrats represent real change unlike the other two Parties. We would restore fairness to our educational system, tax regime, the way we are governed and employment prospects. I would extend the concept of fairness to include the young and future generations, the animals with which we share the planet and minority groups. To group our policies with those of Labour and Conservatives is a gross injustice to a Party that is fed up with the old seesaw arrangements that have done so much harm to this country.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
