Dr Peter Hirst, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Congleton is claiming that car parking charges in Congleton town centre, implemented about eight weeks ago, are causing significant and potentially long-standing challenges.
This is following his investigation last Tuesday that revealed a significant fall in both takings and customers.
He says, "After an hour or so talking to shop keepers in Bridge Street, I am convinced that the charges are causing severe damage to Congleton town centre.
Peter is concerned that parking charges will cause irreversible decline to shopping areas
"Local traders reported a significant cut of 10-20% in business since Cheshire East Council introduced the parking charges.
"Of course, this varies from shop to shop with those selling low cost and discretionary items being most badly affected."
He continues, "Charity shops are suffering in that volunteers are having to pay for parking. People are also not taking the time to browse or have a cup of coffee."
"I suggest the Executive member spend some time in the town centre" he concludes, "and decide for themselves whether it is worth continuing with these charges before the town's shopping areas undergo a potentially irreversible decline."
