Dear Sir,
Now that the parking charges in Congleton have been in place for about six weeks I thought it is time for an appraisal of the effect. I spent over an hour last Tuesday, 23rd March, visiting a dozen or so businesses on the west side of Bridge Street. My findings reinforce what others have already said in these pages.
Many, though not all the owners and employees I spoke to told me that they had experienced a 10 -20 per cent drop in takings and customers. Those who do come do not now have time to browse and have a cup of coffee. Items at the cheaper end of the market seem most affected. In addition, convenience purchases that can be as easily bought at supermarkets are staying on the shelves.
Volunteers working in the charity shops, who have to drive to work, are finding it difficult unless their employers pay for their parking charges. Some owners are talking of reducing staff and others mentioned the dismal absence of shoppers on the street. If the members of Cheshire East Council cabinet want evidence for a fundamental review of these charges, I suggest they visit Congleton town centre soon.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
