Dear Sir,
It is encouraging that three prominent Labour MPs have been expelled from the Parliamentary Party for allegedly abusing their positions for financial rewards. What is not so well known is that local and national public servants are responsible for negotiating huge contracts and selecting suppliers. These same people do not need to declare any conflict of interests.
This means that they can invest in companies that benefit from their decisions and make financial gains. They can own shares in or even companies with whom they are signing multi-million pounds contracts. A supplier could allocate shares to public servants to give them huge incentives to award contracts.
Recent scandals of public procurement have involved lack of equipment for our forces in Afghanistan, NHS IT systems and road building contracts.
What we need is a new set of rules that ensures full disclosure, stops public servants joining suppliers and bans some of the more corrupt forms of deal making.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
