Dear Sir,
Cheshire East Council has settled for a modest rise in our Council Tax for the coming financial year. We were led to believe however that a net zero budget was possible as late as January this year. In addition, where are the promised savings from the move to Cheshire East? At a time of severe financial pressures on households, should not the Council have carried through with the £19 Million of savings that they had proposed?
My councillor colleagues who sit on Cheshire East Council have mentioned to me the late availability of financial information that hinders them in offering alternative proposals. It is still early days for the Council and we are inclined to hope for more time and information in future years. This does not however help those who are hit hardest by the reduced services or increased costs.
The Conservatives on Cheshire East Council have such a majority that they do not need to consider other's views. If so, I can understand the logic of not receiving them. This lack of genuine debate has a direct parallel with another recent consultation process that your readers will not need reminding about.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
