Dear Peter,
Half a million education professionals standing up for education
Last year saw the launch of an historic partnership agreement between the National Union of Teachers (NUT) and the University and College Union (UCU). While both organisations will maintain their own identities, the purpose of the partnership is to bring together almost half a million teachers and educators to campaign for education.
We believe - and our members believe - that children, young people and adults deserve the best education service and the chance to access it all through their lives.
NUT and UCU want to put education firmly on the agenda for all candidates standing in the general election.
We should make it clear that we will not be campaigning for any political party. We are both independent, unaffiliated trade unions and will be seeking to make sure that education is on the political agenda and that candidates are considering our policies and the needs of the local community. We believe this is critically important, now more than ever, at this time of recession when education and training must be at the heart of any successful strategy to move towards economic recovery.
We are enclosing a NUT/UCU 'pledge' card which highlights our values for education and asks candidates to support our key priorities for the next government:
Schools
Assessment reform, an end to SATS and primary school classes of 20 by 2020. Trust teachers with the curriculum.
A qualified teacher for every child, for every lesson.
Colleges and Universities
Guarantee a local place at college or university for all who qualify.
Give adults without qualifications a right to learn; and recruit an extra 10,000 education staff to teach them.

We want to hear from you
We want to hear from you what you think about our four 'pledges'. Let us know if you agree with them and tell us what you think are the best ways to achieve these goals?
We want to publish your answers on our websites so our members can see who is standing up for education locally. We will be encouraging all our members to contact PPCs from the mainstream political parties locally, to ask you your views on making education a critical issue in the campaign. We know that a lot of our members will care deeply and be ready to use their vote to support their profession.
To tell us what you think go to:

If you have any other questions or would like to contact NUT or UCU, please email pledges@ucu.org.uk.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Best wishes,
Christine Blower Sally Hunt
