Dear Sir,
The Liberal Democrats will, if elected make education one of our four top spending priorities. In our second year after an initial job stimulus package we would give the two Cheshire Local Education Authorities over £25million extra to help their primary and secondary schools. This would reduce class sizes to an average of 20 and 16 respectively and provide a pupil premium to help especially those from poorer households.
The plan would be to increase the funding to those pupils who presently qualify for free school meals to average private school levels. This would follow the pupil to whatever school their parents chose, providing an incentive for schools to offer one-to-one tuition and special catch up classes.
The evidence shows that pupils from disadvantaged homes of equal ability have fallen behind significantly by their 5th birthday. This reduces their life chances and contributes to our appalling level of social mobility. This would be paid for by our proposed changes to tax credits and the administrative savings in the Department of Education and quangos.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
