Dear Sir,
While listening to Cheshire East Council's budgetary consultation meeting last week, it became apparent that a proposal is being considered to close the One-Stop Shops in Alsager, Holmes Chapel and Middlewich. The services provided by these information centres would be transferred to the corresponding libraries. The Council are considering this change, it seems, to cut costs while maintaining the same level of provision.
This suggested alteration raises several questions. With no increase in library staff, their workload will increase. What extra training is to be provided to them for this extra responsibility? In addition, several councillors present raised concerns about the manner in which this proposal was relayed to the staff with no consultation with the employees of the council offices that share the same buildings.
Though the libraries have more extended and variable opening times than the one-stop shops, not everyone is used to visiting their library. Also, what about moving some of the services to local post offices? This would increase their viability as well as offering a more convenient location for many of those who use these services.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
