Dear Sir,
Whilst welcoming Cheshire East Executive's decision to reconsider car parking charges, it might be merely a stay of execution. They are still intending to implement them in some of Congleton town's car parks from next month. For the remainder of the constituency we will have to wait and see.
The fairest solution would be to abandon the whole project across Cheshire East. At the very least, each town and its car parks should be considered separately taking into account the likely effect on our town centres. It seems sensible to take control of on street parking and consult on residents' parking schemes before proceeding.
It is possible the economic climate will have improved by the time they finally make their minds up, increasing the ability of our local shops to cope. A cynic might think however that this announcement by the ruling Tory group on Cheshire East is a desperate attempt to regain popularity with the electorate prior to the forthcoming General Election. If this is the case, I can assure the Tories that the people of Congleton are not that easily bought!
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
