Dear Sir,
I am extremely concerned about the effect of this prolonged spell of cold weather on the elderly. It seems to have come at the worst possible time for them. During the recent holidays, they get lots of attention and then relatives and friends return to work and they can be forgotten.
This is especially true if those closest to them live some distance away. It is all so easy for them to become marooned in their own homes in these icy conditions, especially if they have visual or mobility problems. It can then fall to neighbours who do not know them very well to keep an eye open for any signs of problems.
Telltale signs are milk bottles left on the doorstep, curtains left drawn or no signs of heating on in the home. Cheshire East has an emergency 24-hour telephone number and if there is urgent concern, residents should contact the police. It is all too easy for neighbours to assume others are looking out for them.
Yours sincerely,
