Dr Peter Hirst, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Congleton, is concerned about the effect of this prolonged spell of cold weather on the elderly, especially those living alone.
"In some of our more hilly parts of the constituency it is easy for the elderly, particularly those with mobility problems to be marooned in their own homes, he explains.
"I've been out visiting our constituents and found some of their drives extremely tricky to negotiate," he adds.
"In addition, some elderly residents are uncertain about the extra payment they will receive to help heat their homes.
"Following the festive season when they get visits from family and friends it is all too easy for them to be forgotten.
"Neighbours can look out for telltale signs of possible problems like drawn curtains or uncollected milk bottles.
"They should contact the council or police if they are concerned. In addition, Cheshire East Council should institute a working group to address this issue by contacting those at risk, encouraging people to keep an eye on them and publicising their helpline," he concludes.
