Dear Sir,
As I look forward to the coming year that will include a General Election, I cannot help but think how fortunate most of us are living here at this time. True we have challenges such as the economic debacle that I think historians will judge to be a disaster for this country. However, generally we still have the opportunity to help others while still enjoying our unique journey on this fragile planet.
Societies share common values such as respect for those who have the courage to live according to their principles. That many in distant lands suffer for exercising this right is something I will strive to remember when out talking to you on your doorsteps in the next few months. Despite its limitations, our democracy enables us to discuss serious issues in a civilised manner, respecting others views however much we disagree with them.
I will keep in mind that even in this relatively affluent constituency, that there are many who live in poverty and struggle to make ends meet. I will also recollect those in the Armed Forces who risk their lives, often with families containing young children back home. Whatever the rights or wrongs of conflict, we can admire their bravery, stoicism and discipline. That this area contains so many selfless people dedicated to working for the common good will motivate me to continue campaigning to win this seat for the Liberal Democrats.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
