Congleton Liberal Democrats will fight for a free two-hour parking period
Dr Peter Hirst, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Candidate for Congleton is sympathising with many of the aims of "No 2 Parking Charges", an umbrella group opposed to the imposition of car parking charges. The group represents the towns and villages in the old Congleton Borough which will be affected if they are introduced. Like "No 2 Parking Charges", Dr Hirst fears that the imposition of charges will hit local shops badly.
The "No 2 Parking Charges" group has written to MPs on the Conservative front bench - reminding them that it is official Conservative policy to protect the small retailers in our market towns from the threat of competition from the large supermarkets. They also attack the decision of the Tory-controlled Cheshire East Council to bring in these parking charges.
An accompanying survey of Sandbach residents shows that the vast majority will shop elsewhere if Conservative controlled Cheshire East Council imposes parking charges in Sandbach, one of the towns threatened.
Dr Peter Hirst comments: " It is right that "No 2 Parking Charges" shows Conservative Central Office how out of touch the Conservatives on Cheshire East Council are with their own national policy.
"It is clear that the imposition of parking charges will have an adverse effect on the small independent retailers in each town and village centre in the Congleton constituency. Saying otherwise shows a complete disregard for the results of their own consultations on this issue."
He continues, "Congleton Liberal Democrats will continue to argue for a free two-hour period as a minimum."
