Dear Sir,
I was interested to learn that Cheshire East Council has recently signed up to the 10:10 campaign. This is a broadly based initiative to lower emissions by 10 per cent by the end of next year. Organisations in the public, private and voluntary sectors as well as individuals can commit themselves to this undertaking. However, when Lib Dem MPs proposed this measure recently in Westminster, the other two Parties did not support it.
Local government, especially Liberal Democrat controlled ones, are leading the fight against climate change. Forum for the Future published their annual league table of sustainable cities last week. Newcastle and Bristol, both Liberal Democrat controlled, are first and second with four other Liberal Democrat controlled cities in the top ten. This shows the emphasis we give to environmental sustainability when in power.
The Government needs to give more power and resources to local government to combat climate change. Unfortunately, over the last thirty years Westminster has severely curtailed its ability to operate on a variety of measures. The Liberal Democrats will free our town halls to act decisively in the interests of its inhabitants as determined by their individual needs.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
