The Electorate's Dilemma - letter to Congleton Chronicle

November 25, 2009 9:06 PM

Dear Sir,

The electorate have a dilemma in deciding where to cast their vote at the coming General Election. They are rightly completely disillusioned with this Labour Government. After twelve years in office, it has failed to deliver on public services despite pumping billions into them; it has failed to relieve poverty and it has been instrumental in the present lending, housing and employment crisis.

The Conservatives were bereft of any policy apart from reducing inheritance tax up to a few months ago. Now they seem to want to slash public services, adding to our unemployment - whilst at the same time coming up with major infrastructure projects totalling an estimated £53 Billion, with no idea of how to pay for them.

There are also a range of other parties - such as the Greens, BNP and UKIP - each with their own agendas but without the range and depth of policies necessary to make them a credible force in British politics. They are all lukewarm towards Europe - but, like it or not, it is only by working with our colleagues across the Channel that we will combat many of our challenges.

That leaves the Liberal Democrats. I believe we have a coherent set of costed policies for the next decade and beyond. We will deliver them within a flexible time span depending on the state of the national finances at the time we gain power. They include plans to tackle climate change and youth unemployment, plans to give every child a fighting chance by reducing class sizes and plans to improve the governance of our country by introducing more voter choice, enhancing the power of Parliament and reforming the system of expenses by increasing accountability.

Yours sincerely,

Dr Peter Hirst
