Dear Sir,
Truancy rates have rocketed under the present government. They are now at a record high. The problem, as often with both Labour and the Conservative initiatives is that they think they can solve these types of issues by top-down decrees issued without any consideration of the different types of pupils, schools and neighbourhoods affected.
What we need is an individual approach focused on the needs of specific children. The lowering of class sizes as promised by the Liberal Democrats will help. More individual attention either on a one to one basis or in small-targeted groups as I witnessed recently on my visit to Congleton High School is also indicated.
If pupils feel that teachers are addressing their individual needs it will help to prevent the alienation and low self-esteem that is the cause of so much truancy. In subjects such as maths where progress depends on building on what the student already knows it is vital that the teacher recognises early on those pupils that require extra tuition.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
