Dr Peter Hirst, Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Congleton, condemns Cheshire East Council's decision to sell off the site of the former Church Lawton Primary School.
Cheshire East Council Tory Cabinet at its meeting last Tuesday (10th November) decided to sell off the land previously occupied by Lawton Primary School.
They stated that it was surplus to requirements. This was despite, during the consultation process prior to closing the school, their statement that it would be retained for educational and community use.
Councillor Peter Hirst exclaims " During the consultation process, Cheshire East Council promised to retain this land. Now they seem to expect the local community to out-bid commercial developers.
"At the very least the local community should be given more time to consider possible uses for this valuable resource. Once sold it is lost forever.
He continues " It is typical of this over centralised Council that once the decision was made to close the school, all they can think of is how to make the most money from the land.
"It is ironic that the most likely outcome of this exercise will result in more housing, the lack of which is the cause of the school closing in the first place.
"They will soon be consulting on a new primary school," he concludes.
