Tories Unfit to Govern

November 25, 2009 8:43 PM

"It is clear that the Conservative Party, on present evidence, would be a disaster for this country if they became the Government after the General Election" says Dr Peter Hirst, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Congleton. "It is not enough to just say they should replace a jaded Labour government. They must come up with some sound policy proposals that help the hard-pressed people of Congleton, Alsager, Middlewich, Sandbach and our rural areas.

"Amongst the policy areas where the Conservatives have no idea are the economy, reducing inequality and foreign policy.

"Their leader, David Cameron, is in favour of cutting public spending before even waiting for the economy to recover from the most serious downturn since the 30s. This will hit those in Congleton who most depend on public services such as the elderly.

"His economic plans will also give rise to a £53 Billion black hole of capital investment - with his party failing to disclose any means by which they will find the money to fill it.

"They will offer help for married couples while doing nothing for single parent households where 40% of children in poverty live. It is wrong to make this sort of distinction which will mean that the gap in income between those people in our community who the Tories favour and the rest will get wider.

"Also, to pander to the Europhobe element of their supporters, the Conservatives have left the European Peoples' Party - where they had some influence - and joined the far right "lunatic" fringe."

"They cannot assume that the British people will vote for them just because they are fed up with the present Government when there is a credible alternative in the Liberal Democrats," he concludes.
