Dear Sir,
It has come to my notice that the stall Cheshire East Council hired at the Conservative Party conference included a virtual golf competition. The prize for hitting the longest drive was a free night at Mottram Hall Hotel. It is alleged that the cost to the Council is £16,492.
At a time when budgets are tight, your readers might agree that this is an extravagant use of taxpayers' money. It is all very well for individual councillors to support political parties at their own expense. However, for a council to spend such an amount on promoting itself at a Party conference seems wrong.
This raises the whole issue of Cheshire East Council's transparency and accountability. Too often sums of money such as this are immersed under heading such as "Promotion" with much larger amounts. This makes it challenging to uncover issues such as the above except by accident or a leak to the media. The Council should give members providing scrutiny of its activities much more information in a timely fashion so that they can perform this important job more easily.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
