Dear Sir,
Shopping is a social, leisure and cultural activity as well as a commercial one. This is something that the Executive of Cheshire East Council does not seem to appreciate. Calculating the cost of fuel, to see if people save money by shopping locally, despite car parking charges, shows a lack of understanding of human nature.
Many of our local shops' survival depend on that extra errand in addition to the regular weekly shop. Imposing car-parking charges, however low, will tend to curtail this "luxury". The weekly shop could also become a competition to find the cheapest place to park adding to climate changing causing emissions.
It occurred to me while listening to the public consultation exercises performed over the last few weeks in Middlewich, Alsager and Holmes Chapel that Cheshire East Council are in danger of doing something because they can do it. What we really need is charges for out of town shopping to encourage local visits that cut emissions. Until this is done along with including privately own car parks in the controls to deter long term parking it should look to find its revenue elsewhere.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
