Dear Sir,
It seems that at least one of the Cheshire East Conservative councillors, representing the old Congleton Borough, feels that we are getting a raw deal from our new unitary council. During the Congleton Partnership AGM at Congleton Town Hall last Tuesday, he encouraged the members of the Partnership to do more to get Congleton's voice heard. Surely, this is our representatives' function and your readers can reasonable ask whether he, at least, is allowing party loyalty to interfere with defending local interests.
We are already experiencing fortnightly refuse collections, the imposition of car parking charges and the closure of a local primary school. There is the risk that Cheshire East might refuse planning permission for a town centre supermarket in Middlewich that is suffering economic challenges, according to a recent report. It has also yet to decide the fate of an incinerator that the town and the surrounding area have clearly shown they do not want.
It is early days for Cheshire East Council. We do have all out elections however in 2011 and it is up to the Council to show before then that it is working on behalf of the whole borough. Otherwise, voters will decide to demonstrate their concerns at the ballot box.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
