Dear Sir,
It was clear on listening to the description of The Trust's preferred option at last night's meeting in the Town Hall that it risks downgrading Congleton Memorial Hospital despite increasing the number of beds. Moving facilities such as the x-ray department to the new super surgery may well result in it offering patients there more services. It could however mean that nurses looking after ill and recovering patients at the hospital site will have a constant battle to get them the required care.
With over one and a half acres at the hospital site, it seems reasonable to at least consider moving the surgeries and new facilities there. The private developer can upgrade the inpatient services while this work goes on either by demolition and rebuild or as a modernisation of the existing building. This would mean that we would have essential services such as physiotherapy on one site making the allocation of resources easier.
If the preferred option goes ahead, I fear that the beds at The Memorial Hospital will become a glorified nursing home with the developer using the remainder of the site to build sheltered accommodation. This might give the best return on investment though whether it is the best configuration of service is a mute point. It seems that the people of Congleton require a debate on the right balance between accessibility and the fair allocation of resources between inpatients and outpatients.
Yours sincerely,
Dr Peter Hirst
