Responding to the frightening revelations about MPs expenses Dr Peter Hirst, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Congleton thinks the whole culture at Westminster requires changing.
He says "There is far too much emphasis on what MPs can get out of the system rather than give. The present accepted practice of taking paid directorships of private companies is no longer acceptable.
He continues "They require a reasonable salary that enables everyone to consider being a MP. Then they would not need to receive remuneration for their outside interests. Being a MP is a full time job whether you are a cabinet minister or a back bencher."
He concludes "I support ending the practice of allowing sitting MPs from receiving any money from work outside Parliament. This would improve the work of MPs by focusing on their primary function. The present debacle demands nothing less."
