At their Planning Committee meeting on Tuesday, 9th June Middlewich Town Council voted to inform Cheshire East Council that they opposed the planning application by Coventa to build an incinerator in the town.
Commenting Cllr Peter Hirst, Liberal Democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Congleton says " I welcome this decision by our Planning Committee to object to this proposal. It is not necessary because of the forecasted reduction in waste over the coming years and the presence of other energy from waste facilities in the area.
"It will act as a disincentive to waste minimisation and recycling. It will draw in waste from across the region and beyond to keep it going. There are no plans to use the canal and railway to transport the waste, adding to our road congestion."
He continues "I don't want us to be importing other's waste from far and wide and helping them escape their responsibilities to manage their own. Waste needs to be dealt with locally to minimise emissions and encourage local accountability.
He concludes" The twenty-five year timescale is too long for such a commercial undertaking. It will be a huge blot on our landscape and the site proposed is not even in Cheshire East's Local Plan for this purpose."
