Responding to the news that the European Court of Human Rights has declared as illegal the Government's action in retaining innocent people's profile on the national DNA database, Congleton's Lib Dem prospective MP Dr Peter Hirst says "Today's announcement by the Home Secretary Jacqui Smith is not good enough."
"The Government is clearly doing the bare minimum to comply with this ruling. Leaving these details on the database for up to 6 years is unnecessary and is a clear breach of peoples rights.
Dr Hirst continues " The courts should be involved if the police wish to retain innocent people's information for longer than 3 years as is presently the case in Scotland."
