Responding to the recent decision by Cheshire East Council to refer the decision on car-parking charges to their Scrutiny Panel, Dr Peter Hirst, Liberal democrat Parliamentary Spokesperson for Congleton repeats his call for maintaining some free parking.
He says " Now that the decision has been referred there is a bit more time for Cheshire East to reconsider their irresponsible plan. With the recession biting, making shoppers and other visitors pay for parking could seriously damage the prospects for survival and recovery of local shops and businesses.
"I strongly urge the Council's Executive - which makes the final decision - to reconsider the possible effect of charging for virtually all off-street parking on local retailers, already being hit hard by our recession.
Peter continues "At the very least the first two or three hours parking should be free to help the local economy. Otherwise there is a real danger that we will be seeing more empty shops.
Dr Hirst added: "Shoppers are becoming very choosey about where they spend their hard earned cash. Introducing car parking charges at this time could easily send them further afield - further contributing to emissions, congestion and threatening road safety."
