The possible transfer of Crewe Sorting Office's services to Warrington raises several questions. What guarantees have Royal Mail given concerning the quality of services if this change occurs? There are examples of such "rationalisations" causing problems such as personally witnessed on election night waiting for postal votes to arrive.
All those with a CW postal code will presumably be potentially affected by such a transfer of services. I am sure the decision to close it is being made on commercial grounds with little regard for the consequences locally. The increase of emissions from those commuting to keep their jobs and in moving our letters and parcels about will be significant. So will be the increased congestion, deteriorating road safety and quality of life on those affected by these increased vehicle movements at a time when we should be reducing them.
The Liberal Democrats believe in maintaining local services if at all possible. Royal Mail is a publicly owned organisation. If there are any advantages to retaining it in the public realm, taking decisions on a wider range of criteria than purely financial ones must be one of them. It should however be possible to give it greater commercial freedom to invest and compete while retaining certain vital characteristics such as delivering a local service.
